I am now professionally coiffed. The last attempt at colouring my hair left the colours a bit blocky so I went back today to have some more segments put in. I now have chilli pink, blonde and aubergine purple streaks in my hair. I’ll be sure to find a photo for you once we’re back from holiday. It will need a couple of washes to settle in properly.

My goodness it takes a long time though. It took 3 hours just to put the foils in !! Even though my hair isn’t that long it is very thick. It causes all sorts of difficulties. My hair is very resistant to dye, which is sort of a good thing, but does mean that the dye has to stay on for longer than usual to even partially take. After 7 long hours I finally escaped the hair dresser to collapse into bed for a nap. The actual hair dying is not too tiring it is the being social for so long that is the problem.

Probably doesn’t help that I’m in partial hibernation mode. Once I woke up from my nap there was no way I was leaving my room to socialize with family. I read Naked in Death by J. D. Robb instead. I’ve read the start of the series before but after reading Tempting Danger by Eileen Wilks I had a craving to see Eve Dallas again. I’m even considering buying the Kindle versions although I think I’ll hold off for now and see what the holiday brings. The library has the complete collection so there is no necessary reason to buy the books when I can still get my hands on them for free.

Love reading, love migraines …

So as expected I fell under the spell of my hoard of books. I read Deeper than Midnight by Lara Adrian, Mortal Danger and Blood Lines by Eileen Wilks, finished Winds of Change and started Winds of Fury by Mercedes Lackey yesterday. This is possible when you only have two hours of sleep due to a migraine. The nausea was particularly annoying and made sleeping impossible. I made up for it today with 12 hours dead to the world and then needing an afternoon nap as well.

I did get some reading time in today as well though as my sister fell asleep while we were watching TV so I got the go ahead to read while she had her nap. When she woke up I was ready for my nap !! At least it gave her a chance to get some work done without any distractions.

My sister and I did manage to enjoy watching the latest episode of Grimm before we both gave up on tele. After our respective naps we watched the first 5 episodes of series 3 of The Mentalist on DVD from LoveFilm. We enjoy the series a great deal and are disappointed we didn’t realise that the 4th series is on TV since we will have to wait a while before it becomes available on DVD. Although we have plenty of shows to watch at the moment. We have just picked up watching Touch (Sky 1), Alcatraz (Watch) and Once upon a time (Channel 5). Looks like they will be added to our must watch immediately list.

What with all the other shows we are currently following we have plenty of TV time stored up on our Sky box. In fact with the holiday coming up we will have to go through the Planner and trim out the dead wood. We’ve got lots of films stored we will probably never get around to watching. On that note I will take myself off to see if I can’t watch and delete something on our Planner.

Binge reading the new addiction …

Having started on my reading binge I was unavailable yesterday. Given the choice between opening my computer and finishing Tempting Danger by Eileen Wilks I picked finishing the book. I was very surprised by how much of a page turner it was. I enjoy the urban / paranormal romance genre but it is very rare to come across a book where you HAVE to turn the page and find out what happens next. I literally couldn’t put the book down. Thankfully my sister was fully engaged with a jigsaw puzzle and gave me a free pass to spend 5 hours in my room reading.

Lily Yu has a great voice as the main narrator, the main male lead is interesting and likeable and I really like the world building. Given the number of books I’ve read in this genre I’m not sure why this particular series seems so good. I think I might like it so much because it has overtones of the In Death series by J.D. Robb. We have a smart tough police woman investigating a murder who encounters a rich ‘playboy’ as a suspect. She undertakes to prove his guilt or innocence. The two form a romantic entanglement during the process. Now while the two books have very different settings and the main characters are by no means identical in all ways I think if Eve Dallas and Lily Yu met they would be great friends. Perhaps I enjoyed it so much because Eileen WIlks doesn’t allow the romance to distort the plot or tempo of the novel. While the romance is well drawn it doesn’t push the other characters or investigation elements completely off the page.

In some ways I actually prefer the Lupi series since I find the trauma and violence in the In Death series a bit much to read one book after the next. Whereas the Lupi series seems to be a slightly less graphically violent set of novels. So once I’d finished with Tempting Danger I immediately went to my online library account and reserved copies of the rest of the series. Sadly none of the books I’m awaiting has arrived yet so I’m left only able to read any of the 1000’s of books I own. Given that I’ve gone back to Mercedes Lackey and am reading Winds of Fate. I did consider reading the Arrows Trilogy but I read them again reasonably recently and thought if I start with Winds of Fate I will probably read at the least the rest of the Mage Winds trilogy before bouncing back to the library books.

Fame, I’m gonna’ read forever

So I’m now experiencing my 15 seconds of fame. I’m a regular haunter of the Open University online community site Platform. Since they have a blogroll of blogs by OU students I emailed to add my blog to the list. The editor was kind enough to ask me whether I’d be interested in having an article done about my studies and having ME. So I now have an article published about me on the Platform site.

I was surprised to find it is actually very weird reading about someone else talking about you in the third person. I’ve written stuff about other people in the third person before and didn’t think much of it. But it turns out it is a very weird sensation to have a stranger talking about you as though he knows you. Of course he sort of does since I provided all the information but I still had an off balance sensation when reading the article.

Other than that I’ve been engaged in a reading marathon. I read Tiger Eye by Marjorie M. Liu and Dark Watcher by Lilith Saintcrow yesterday. I have The Clone Republic by Steven L. Kent and Tempting Danger by Eileen Wilks lined up to read next. I really enjoyed Tiger Eye so I’m planning to buy the Kindle versions and take them on holiday with me to read. They are easy reading in a genre I enjoy. The Watcher series is stocked at my library so I’ve reserved the rest of the series. They are quite short so I should get than all read in a couple of days. I’ve somewhat given up on the Mercedes Lackey series for now. I’ve been distracted by the Amazon package of new books but I’m sure I’ll be back soon to carry on though the series.
